Downtown Raleigh's Renaissance

Three major projects totaling more than $300 million are moving forward to make Raleigh a more viable meetings destination:

  • New downtown convention center
  • 400-room Marriott headquarters hotel
  • Reopening of Fayetteville Street to vehicular traffic

They are among $2.5 billion dollars of new projects that will open in the coming years in downtown Raleigh and catalysts for Raleigh's 3 Billion Renaissance.

Convention Center

  • 150,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space
  • 30,000 sq. ft. of meeting space
  • 32,000 sq. ft. ballroom
  • Total of 212,000 sq. ft. of  rentable space
  • Approximately 510,000 sq. ft. of total building including prefunction space
  • Official groundbreaking on April 6, 2005
  • Projected opening Fall 2008

Raleigh Marriott City Center

  • Four Diamond quality Marriott - Convention Center Hotel 
  • 400 guest rooms, including 9 suites 
  • 9,000 sq ft ballroom
  • 6,000 sq ft of breakout meeting space
  • Indoor pool
  • Fitness Facility
  • Projected opening Summer 2008

Fayetteville Street Mall

  • Raleigh 's premier address with the southern portion reaching Marriott Raleigh City Center hotel, Raleigh Convention Center and Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts
  • $10 million project featuring 2 lanes of traffic, wide sidewalks to accommodate outdoor dining, and parallel parking; the area will be embellished with sidewalks made of stone pavers, benches, bike racks, trees, planters, and public artwork
  • Raleigh's Main Street since its creation as one of the 4 streets radiating north, south, east and west from the Capitol in the 1792 William Christmas Plan for the new State Capital City at Raleigh
  • The Mall was constructed in the late 1970s and has existed in its original design until this conversion to vehicular traffic
  • Opened Summer 2006
